**The media below contains the opinion of an individual student and therefore does not represent or speak to the values of Vestavia Hills High School and Vestavia Hills City Schools**
By this point, most Vestavia students have come up with a solid opinion about their classes, including which ones they enjoy most. I recently conducted a survey to find out just that. With responses from all grades at VHHS, the results reveal a diverse array of interests, showcasing the unique experiences that shape our students’ academic journeys. Going by grade level, here are the results.
Freshman Favorites:
The freshmen I surveyed all displayed an interest in Honors Biology taught at the Freshman Campus. Notably, Astha Mehta praised Mrs. Pickens for how “good she explains the material”. Additionally, Astha and Divya Ramani both described how they enjoyed the “interactive group work” that they did in Honors Biology.
Sophomore Standouts:
The Sophomores I surveyed displayed a much more unique set of classes: all of them being different from each other. Jaden Kopwe listed Physical Science as his favorite class because it is “easy and fun.” Alan Sheng described how track and field “allows him to do hard things alongside other people” enabling him to make a lot of friends. Connor Moorhouse stated Math Team was his favorite because “it’s difficult and at a fast enough pace to where it’s interesting.”
Junior Gems:
The Juniors went back to the basics and chose mostly core classes. Lily Xie enjoys AP Chemistry because she “actually understands what’s going on.” Will Crowe, reminiscing on his Freshman days, praised AP Biology because he “could really connect with it.” Judy Yamani has taken an interest in AP Language because she “likes Mr. Sinnott’s teaching style - casual and relatable.”
Senior Selections:
The Seniors clearly favored classes that connected them with the real world in some way or the other. Aiden Scott values the fact that AP Chemistry might “benefit his passion for dentistry.” Similarly, Allison Xie appreciates AP Government because it’s “real world applicable since it’s election season.”
School-Wide Succeeder:
Debate (PF and LD) was consistently chosen as the favorite class of students throughout all grades. It is applauded for being “chill” and “thought-provoking” alongside being “fun” and most important of all, “a good community team-bonding experience.”
The survey reveals the striking diversity of students’ likings here at Vestavia. But it also elucidates the tendency for all Vestavia students to take pride in “doing hard things” as Alan Sheng put it. Ranging from Performance Arts (Music Theory, Annie Bryant) to Chemistry (AP Chemistry, Lily Xie), the futures of Vestavia students are endlessly broad and infinitely thorough.
