Another Win for the Speech and Debate Team

By: Caitlyn Webster-Roberts and Tina Lou

On October 11th-12th, the Vestavia Speech and Debate team competed at the Big GUMP Classic at Montgomery Academy. We’re happy to announce Vestavia Speech and Debate is continuing its win streak.

The team competed in several speech and debate events:

Congress - Congressional Debate mocks the legislative process. Competitors take on the roles of representatives and senators to debate bills. The competitors deliver speeches either in favor or against a bill.

Debate

PF - Public Forum focuses on a topic or a resolution that teams of two have to pick to go pro or con. Here’s the topic for September and October: “The United States federal government should increase its investment in surveillance infrastructure along the southern border.”

BQ - Big Questions debate event that focuses on topics that relate to philosophy, ethics, and science. It makes competitors use critical thinking on both the pros and cons of topics. Here’s the topic for September and October: “Creativity is a more powerful force than intelligence.”

Speech

Oratories - Oratories are original speeches given by competitors. Some events under oratories, such as informative speaking (INF) and original oratory (OO), are 10-minute-long speeches aimed to either inform or persuade. Other events, such as impromptu speaking (IMP) and extemporaneous speaking (EXT), provide the competitors with a prompt with limited time to prepare.

Interpretations - Interp events use already published works, such as books, movies, poems, etc to create new interpretations in a speech format. These are also 10-minute-long speeches, so competitors must cut and reorganize the original work to create a new spin.
