The Speech and Debate team poses for a picture after bringing home lots of hardware.

From January 31st to February 1st, the Vestavia Speech and Debate team competed at the Betty Gunn tournament at Mountain Brook High School. Much like tournaments prior, the team is continuing its win streak.

The team competed in the following events: Congress, Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum, Extemporaneous speaking (EXT), Impromptu (IMP), Original Oratory (OO), Dramatic Interpretation (DI), Poetry Oral Interpretation (POI), Poetry Interpretation), Informative (INF) and Prose.

Congress - Congressional Debate is a mock form of legislation where competitors take on the roles of representatives and senators to debate bills. They deliver speeches in favor or against a bill and even have the ability to ask questions.

Public Forum Debate - The team focuses on a resolution with teams of two choosing to go pro or con. The topic for February is “The United States should accede to the Roman Statute of the International Criminal Court.”

Oratories - Original speeches given by competitors. Some include informative speaking (INF) and original oratory (OO). These are ten-minute-long speeches to inform or persuade judges. Other similar events are impromptu (IMP) and extemporaneous (EXT) when competitors are given a prompt with limited time to prepare their speeches for delivery.

Interpretations - Interpretation or interp events include works already made (books, movies, poems, etc.) These are ten-minute-long speeches with the purpose of making new interpretations in a speech-like format that requires competitors to cut and reorganize the original work for a different take.
