RISE is a spring fundraiser at VHHS where students come together to raise money for the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. During RISE, students serve both their school and community and build strong relationships with their peers. Youth Leadership President Graham Gwaltney says his favorite part about RISE is “the community aspect of it” and that “it’s not just about raising money; it’s about connecting with others and uniting VHHS.” Students participate in service-based projects and plan creative ways to raise funds, whether through a RISE team or at one of the various RISE events listed below.
One of RISE’s biggest events of the year is the Sadie Hawkins Dance in January, which often takes place at the Civic Center. Another event is the Rebel Run, coming up on March 1 at the high school. Anyone in the community can register for this “fun run” on GoFan to run or walk a 5K. Kid’s Day, which will be held on March 15, is a fun opportunity for kids in the community to meet their favorite movie character—this year, Kid’s Day will feature Touch-a-Truck. Closing out VHHS’s fundraising effort is RISE Day. On this day, RISE teams set up tents with food, drinks, games, or other activities such as live music. After a morning and afternoon of RISE Day festivities, students and community members honor those who suffer or have suffered from cancer in a luminary ceremony. Finally, RISE Day ends with an announcement of the total sum generated throughout the RISE season. RISE Day is a time for students to experience and celebrate the impact of their service.
One of the easiest ways for people to participate in RISE is to attend RISE events, enjoying the festivities offered while contributing to a worthwhile cause. Students can also join a RISE team of up to 30 students, of whom one to two serve as captains. These teams come up with different fundraisers throughout the semester and work a tent on RISE Day. Team fundraisers include anything from car washes and bake sales to basketball camps or soccer programs for children with special needs. Anyone interested in joining a RISE team is encouraged to see Mrs. Sweeney in room A241. Students can also serve on RISE Committees, which plan and organize the different RISE events. Committees include Rebel Run, Logistics, and Kid’s Day. Serving on a team or committee is a great way for students to get involved at their school and feel more connected in the community.
By participating in RISE through a team or simply attending a RISE event, students can benefit not only themselves but also their community. Participation in any capacity is always welcome, and the VHHS community is grateful for the effort involved in making RISE happen every year. Be sure to keep an eye out for RISE events, and go Rebels!
